To the Editor:
Please allow an agnostic and democratic socialist to thank you for the excellence of the recent articles on such vital and complex questions as creeping socialism, so called, vs. the welfare state, and the actual role of Jewry in the modern world, Oriental as well as Occidental. To a man in my position, at the age of over ninety-three, self-orientation is not always easy or simple. COMMENTARY has considerably clarified my role and my moral affiliations.
This is a service few appreciate who have not personally experienced the problem in question. It requires brains, knowledge, and sympathy. COMMENTARY possesses these qualifications in a degree which often surprises me. It is, I feel, a deep obligation to acknowledge that psychological and ethical service. Not a few of your faithful readers may associate themselves with me in this tribute to your well-edited and remarkably well-written and thoughtful journal of opinion.
