. . . Professor Riesman [“Controversy,” October] suggests that his ideas imply a new approach to world problems. . . . His main ideas can be stated in the form of two propositions—an explicit one, which suggests that the U. S. and Russia can make a “deal” if they disregard the interests of their allies, and an implicit one, that we must strive after peace at any price. This was, of course, the official policy of the British government under Neville Chamberlain.
