To the Editor:
I read Jerry Z. Muller’s “Capitalism: The Wave of the Future” [December 1988] with great interest and agree with his argument, but I would like to make one correction. Mr. Muller says that by the end of 1982 unemployment in France was “where it had been when the Left came to power” in June 1981. In fact, however, when Mitterrand took office the number of unemployed was 1.7 million while a year later, in June 1982, it was 2 million and by June 1984 had reached 2.7 million out of a total work force of 23 million.
