To the Editor:

To believe that Lonely Crusade is a poor novel is not evidence of prejudice against Negroes and/or Chester Himes. Nor do I think “hate catharsis” (a curious term) is “permissible in a novel” or even in a review. I can only refer to my review, the point of which seems to have stuck in the author’s throat but merely grazed his mind.
