To the Editor:

I should like to inquire what is the clue necessary to understanding Steven Marcus’ criticism (“The Highbrow Know-Nothings,” February 1953)? He quotes some brilliant prose by Wyndham Lewis and then condemns it. Can it be that he has invented an exciting new style—Inverted Criticism? Under this system would it be correct, for instance, to condemn T. S. Eliot as a lapsed atheist?
