To the Editor:
Mr. Hecht’s “Mr. Big Moves to Greener Pastures” (September) was thoroughly enjoyable. His story of Yiddish life in a small town reminds me of Sholom Aleichem’s loving portrayals of the frailties of his fellow Jews.
But, “No matter what you do, somebody’s always finding fault.” In the story, Mr. Hecht’s quotation from the Bible appears as “maase v’nishmo.” It is, of course, “naase v’nishmo.” I’m sure the error must have been typographical, because maase sounds perilously close to masah— which means tax— chas v’chulile.
