To the Editor:
For the past several years COMMENTARY has been publishing stories by Allegra Goodman, thereby allowing its readers to observe the development of a young writer. Miss Goodman’s first stories were competent, though not, I thought, remarkable. But her latest [“One Down,” September] compresses in a few pages the evocation of several personalities and, indeed, entire lives. Miss Goodman’s eye for the significant detail and her ability to suggest depth and complexity in her characters are the talents of a first-rate writer of fiction.
