To the Editor:

I wonder whether the warriors in the attack on masculinity realize the inherent hypocrisy in their creed (“The Psychological War on Masculinity,” February). They are promoting a matriarchy in which women get to decide what men ought to do, all in the name of equality. Why would forcing boys to behave like girls be good if forcing girls to behave like boys would be wrong?

One problem for those now concerned with the abuse of women is that the cure is to raise boys to be gentlemen. This was well understood before the gender wars began. But today, being a gentleman is considered sexist because it carries with it an understanding of the relationship between men and women that is incompatible with the doctrine of the genders being interchangeable.
