To the Editor:

In his otherwise sound review of Abigail Thernstrom’s Whose Votes Count? [Books in Review, June], Barry R. Gross mistakenly identifies L. Douglas Wilder as the lieutenant governor of West Virginia. Wilder is, of course, the lieutenant governor of Virginia and the Democratic nominee for governor. If he defeats Republican Marshall Coleman this year, he will become the country’s first black state chief executive.
