The marriage of politics and Hollywood–strong for many years–seems to have reached a zenith this year with last night’s “tribute films.” Reagan started the tradition in 1980, but since then, the Democrats have really owned the 9- minute collage of black and white footage, historical B-roll, and ersatz interviews filled with unbelievable puffery (Did John Kerry actually describe Kennedy as a man of “incredible sensitivity”?) But while these schmaltz-laden, cinematic love -letters were once exclusively reserved for the Thursday night nominee, this year, everyone gets one. Ted Kennedy had his tribute last night. There’s a Hillary home movie tonight, and I’m sure someone is stitching together some old Biden footage to try to make him look like a mixture of Clint Eastwood and John Wayne. The Oscars and the Democratic convention are becoming indistinguishable.
