Let’s hear it for American technology. It turns out that members of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have been giving a hand to the Egyptian army in its efforts to uncover and destroy the hundreds of tunnels through which Hamas has been smuggling weapons, money, fighters, and anything else it needs. According to this piece in YNet by the veteran journalist Alex Fishman, in the last month the Americans have been using some kind of equipment, presumably sonar, and have succeeded in discovering 42 tunnels in just a month.
We may assume that the U.S. military involvement was not just meant to improve efficiency, but also to monitor how serious Egypt is about stopping the smuggling. Whatever the reason, it’s not a bad development.
