It depends who you ask. If you are Hamas, last Friday at 5 PM Israel time it would have been 4 PM Gaza time. Nothing too strange so far: Palestinians have always asserted their right to switch from summer to winter time at a different date than the one chosen by Israel (that’s how they’re preparing themselves for sovereignty, I guess). But now, with two Palestinian governments in place, the privilege to set the time for Palestine is in contention: both Hamas and Fatah want it for themselves. And so, while it was 5 PM the West Bank on Friday, it was 4 PM in Gaza. But on Sunday, both Gaza and the West bank had reverted to using the same time. The Palestinians were living, albeit briefly, in different time zones. So with two governments vying for the power to “set the clock back,” how well does this bode for Palestinian unity? Not well–and that’s being kind.
