Obama and his spinners keep saying that the president will head out to campaign for all the endangered Democrats. But they might want to reconsider, in light of this:

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Tuesday shows that 24% of the nation’s voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as president. Forty-four percent (44%) Strongly Disapprove, giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -20. … Overall, 42% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the president’s performance. That is the lowest level of approval yet measured for this president.

Perhaps it is a blip, but it is also quite possible that the combination of a sluggish economy, a jittery stock market, and Obama’s non-handling of the BP spill is taking its toll. The primary elections have also refocused the voters on Obama and on how closely or not candidates should cling to him. Whatever the cause, if this keeps up, the damage to the Democratic Party in November will be great because, more than the economy or any other factor, it is the president’s standing that affects his party’s fortunes in midterm elections. As of right now, that spells disaster for the Democrats. So Obama might want to stay home — he would probably only make things worse for fellow Democrats.
