Rick Klein of The Note warns Democrats that, unlike Seinfeld, their convention can’t be about nothing:
A night that was strong in the details was less so on the grand themes. This is an extremely damaging storyline that the Obama campaign needs to address immediately, now, pronto. If Democrats don’t start talking about McCain/Bush very quickly, they will all be talking about John Kerry shortly — and not in a good way.
But it is about something–just not the right things, if you are a Democrat. It is about the Clinton-Obama drama, the wounded Hillary supporters, the seething Obama troops, the media looking for something not pre-packaged, and the public poised to play armchair shrink ( Did she grimace? Was the smile genuine?).
If you thought yesterday was a soap opera, today is high drama and intrigue, all centering on Hillary Clinton’s speech tonight. A poll shows 47% of Democratic women think she should be the VP. Ironically, a stemwinder of a speech might only convince them of her superior qualifications for that job. If the day is Hillary’s and the talk tomorrow will be “Did she do it?” (and what is “it”?), more precious time will be lost that should have been spent defining and bolstering Obama.
By the end of tonight we will know Michelle Obama has a lovely family and Hillary Clinton doesn’t want to be blamed if Obama loses. It isn’t anything most people didn’t know before and I suppose it’s needed groundwork, but it doesn’t move the ball very far for Obama. (And if you like tracking poll noise, Obama has lost ground since the Convention began. Republicans shouldn’t get too excited–those numbers will look very different in a few days.) Still it’s hard to argue that Hillary Clinton didn’t get her moment in the sun. So far she’s getting half the Convention.
