A friend writes:

You may recall that the essence of Ronald Reagan’s victory over Jimmy Carter came by way of reply (not formal reply) to the “malaise” accusation. Reagan said, more or less, “What does he mean? The American people are good.” Everything else followed.

Barack Obama is wrapped in the rhetoric of 1979. Sarah Palin is saying, “The American people are just like me. We can take care of our own lives. And we are good.”
