The strongest argument for voting for Donald Trump in November has very little to do with Trump and almost everything to do with Hillary Clinton.

She is an ethical disaster, and several stories in the last week have fortified that judgment. There was the release of the State Department’s Inspector General report, which demonstrated that virtually everything Clinton has said about her private email server was a lie.

There was the damning post by the liberal, intellectually honest law professor Jonathan Turley on Bill Clinton’s role as honorary chancellor of Laureate International Universities, in which he was paid $16.5 million between 2010 and 2014–a time when the State Department reportedly funneled $55 million in grants during Hillary Clinton’s tenure to groups associated with Laureate’s founder.

There is the report from ABC News that newly released State Department emails reveal how “a major Clinton Foundation donor was placed on a sensitive government intelligence advisory board even though he had no obvious experience in the field, a decision that appeared to baffle the department’s professional staff.” And there is the story in the Wall Street Journal revealing that “at the center of a criminal probe involving Hillary Clinton’s handling of classified information is a series of emails between American diplomats in Islamabad and their superiors in Washington about whether to oppose specific drone strikes in Pakistan.” (Obviously, State Department deliberations about the covert CIA drone program should have been conducted over a more secure government computer system designed to handle classified information.)

This has been one of the consistent threads throughout Hillary Clinton’s public life, beginning in 1978, when she was the first lady of Arkansas, and her series of trades of cattle futures contracts, which were clearly corrupt. The Clinton’s have habitually used their political power to inappropriately enrich themselves, to get around the rules that others are expected to live by, and to subvert laws and cross moral lines to get their way and to satiate their desires.

What is clear from these latest stories is the Hillary Clinton has not only not changed her ways; in some respects, her worst tendencies have been amplified as she’s getting closer to realizing her greatest political ambition. The rest of us shouldn’t go into this blind, then. As president, Hillary Clinton would act as Hillary Clinton acts pre-presidency, except that she would have far greater power to do far more damage. It’s important that even critics of Donald Trump, of which I am one, recognize this. And it highlights why, for many of us, this is such a bleak and dispiriting political year.
