Senator Harry Reid says Republicans are “betting on failure” when it comes to the economy. In fact, the GOP believes Obama’s policies are wrong and are contributing rather than reversing our economic decline. So far the evidence seems to be in their favor.

In any event, it’s worth reminding people that this is the same Harry Reid who, in April 2007, declared that the Iraq war was “lost” and insisted that “the surge is not accomplishing anything.” In fact, as we now know, the war was not lost. We were actually beginning to see some progress when Reid made his comments. And the surge has been a remarkable military success. I documented the sorry record of Reid and other liberals here.

But it’s worth emphasizing again: how Harry Reid and virtually his entire party conducted themselves during that period — continuing to insist the war was lost and the surge was a failure even after we were seeing undeniable progress is Iraq — remains one of the more disgraceful things we have seen in American politics. If Reid had his way, the Iraq war would have been lost, with horrible geopolitical and human consequences. To watch him now complain about Republicans’ “betting on failure” is hypocritical and, given his record, laughable.
